The period of the united monarchy was, arguably, the “Golden Age” of the Israelite kingdom. It spanned the reigns of Saul, David and Solomon. During this period the kingdom reached its furthest extent of geographic expansion. It also achieved, perhaps, its greatest level of economic prosperity. International trade became an important factor in the economy. The arts and architecture flourished. Most of what we call the “Wisdom Literature” in the Bible dates from this period. Though it was a time of growth and prosperity, the seeds of downfall and destruction were also present.
The united monarchy is surprisingly relevant to us today. We can learn a great deal from it. The following lessons are taken from the books of 1st Samuel, 2nd Samuel, 1st Kings, 1st Chronicles, 2nd Chronicles, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and the Song of Songs.
